A Day in the Life of Jesus, John 19:1-37

Don’t Miss The Importance Of The Cross!

►John Gives Us Pictures Of The Day Of Jesus Crucifixion.

John 19:1-3

Picture 1- Flogging

Picture 2- Taunting

  • In John 19:3 the verb tense indicates that the soldiers repeatedly came to him, mocked him and beat him with their hands.

John 19:4-11

Picture 3- Jesus before Pilate and the Crowd.

  • A comparison of the gospels shows that Pilate pronounced Jesus guiltless 7 times
  • Why didn’t he release Him?
  • What’s It Cost You To Follow Jesus As Lord?

Picture 4- Jesus before Pilate alone.

  • As believers we desperately need to understand this Biblical view of life: ____________ One has no power—except that which is given him or her from above.
  • Romans 8:28

John 19:12-16

Picture 5- Jesus at Gabbatha.

  • The closer we get to the cross, the more clearly, we see _______ people really are.

Matthew 10:26, “There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.”  (NIV)

John 19:17-18

Picture 6- Jesus Carrying His Cross.

  • The condemned man was forced to carry the crossbeam, weighing between 110 to 150 pounds, from the prison to the place of execution.

Picture 7- Jesus Crucified!

  • To the Phoenicians, the cross was a means of death that satisfied their belief in a god of the earth.
  • To the Romans, the cross became an expertly used instrument of torture and control.
  • To the Jewish people, crucifixion represented the most disgusting form of death.

Deuteronomy 21:23, “…anyone whose body is displayed on a tree is cursed by God.”  (NCV)

To the Christian, the Cross is the glory and LOVE of God!

WHAT HAPPENED AT THE CROSS?

The executioner would lay the crossbeam behind the victim and bring him down quickly by jerking him to the ground.

As the victim fell the beam would be fitted under the back of his neck.

The executioner would wear a leather apron with pockets for the nails.

He would place two square 5” nails between his teeth and a hammer in his hand.

He would kneel first beside the right arm of the one who was to be crucified, his knee would rest on the inside of the elbow and he would hold the forearm flat on the board.

The executioner would feel for the hollow spot between the bones in the wrist.  A nail would be placed there and driven through the hand into the crossbeam with a sharp blow.

He would do the left hand in the same way.

The two soldiers would grab each side of the crossbeam and as the executioner motioned they would lift.

When the cross beam was set firmly, the executioner would reach up and set the board which listed the crime, then he would kneel before the cross and take the feet, nailing the right foot over the left foot.

The Romans had made an “art” of positioning the feet so that the victim would endure the greatest torture while on the cross.

Jesus would have then become aware of two sources of pain.

His arm and shoulder muscles would begin to cramp severely.

His pectoral muscles would constrict, preventing him from breathing out.

►Don’t Ignore The Meaning Of The Cross—God’s Love And Our Salvation!

John 19:19-22

Picture 8- The Sign.

The sign shows us _______________________!

We learn three things about who Jesus is from that sign:

  1. No circumstances can diminish the power of who Jesus is.
  2. The world can clearly see who Jesus is.
  3. People will try, but will always fail, to change the truth about who Jesus is.

John 19:23-24

Picture 9- Casting Lots.

At the cross, even the most common of events becomes the ______________ of prophecy.

John 19:25-27

Picture 10- Mary at the foot of the Cross.

Even with the terrible pain on the cross Jesus was only thinking of others.

  • He forgave those who were crucifying him.
  • He welcomed the thief into paradise.
  • He arranged care for his mother.

John 19:28-29

Picture 11- A drink of sour wine.

Jesus cried out, “I thirst,” in order to ______________ prophecy!

John 19:30

Picture 12- Jesus Died!

  • What do you hear when you hear the words: “It is finished?” (Grace, Forgiveness, Eternal Life, Salvation And More—Are Yours In Christ!)

  • What does, “He gave up His spirit” say to you?

John 19:31-37

Picture 13- A spear in Jesus side.

The blood and water showed us two things:

  1. Jesus Really Died!

Blood, which had already separated into the plasma and the hemoglobin, came pouring out together. That only happens when the circulation has stopped, and death has occurred.

  1. Jesus Died For ______________________!

How does this awe-inspiring series of pictures at the cross—fit into my ordinary often routine life?

  1. Picture victory over sin and temptation!

Romans 6:6, “We know that our old life died with Christ on the cross so that our sinful selves would have no power over us and we would not be slaves to sin.”  (NCV)

Galatians 5:24, “Those who belong to Christ have nailed their natural evil desires to his cross and crucified them there.”  (TLB)

  1. Picture God’s power as a part of your everyday life!

1 Corinthians 1:18, “For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”  (NIV)

  1. Picture yourself as a person of incredible faith!

Galatians 2:20, “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”  (NIV)

Galatians 3:1, “Oh, foolish Galatians! What magician has hypnotized you and cast an evil spell upon you? For you used to see the meaning of Jesus Christ’s death as clearly as though I had waved a placard before you with a picture on it of Christ dying on the cross.”  (TLB)

  1. Picture a change in what is important to you!

Galatians 6:14, “As for me, God forbid that I should boast about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because of that cross, my interest in all the attractive things of the world was killed long ago, and the world’s interest in me is also long dead.”  (TLB)

  1. Picture yourself…forgiven and pure in God’s sight!

Colossians 2:15, “In this way God took away Satan’s power to accuse you of sin, and God openly displayed to the whole world Christ’s triumph at the cross where your sins were all taken away.”  (TLB)
